Boldon History Society
The Society meets on the last Tuesday of each month except December
at the Grey Horse Hotel at 7 pm

Enchanted Christmas Weekend at Bede's World
Weekend of 19th -20th December 12 noon till 4:30 pm.A visit from Father Christmas, the chance to join Christmas elves and make a small present to take home, plus an amazing festive fancey dress party packed full of Christmas songs, games and activities. Hogmanay Hike
31st December 10 am til 3 pmJoin the staff from Souter Lighthouse on this festive 7 mile walk around the Marsden Circular taking in Cleadon Hills, Marsden Old Quarry and the sea cliffs. The cost is £2.50 per person, which includes homemade hot soup at the end of the walk. Please wear sturdy footwear, bring waterproofs and a packed lunch.

Pier to Pier New Year Walk
Sunday 10th January, Bus 9am, walk 9:30 amBlow away the winter blues by enjhoying a refreshing eifht mile walk along the scenic coastel paths of South Tyneside and Sunderland. Considered internationally important for is bird populations and showcasing fabulous limestone geology, the coastal walk is an excellent way to see one of the mahor attractions of the ariea.
This year the walk will be from Roker Pier to South Shields Pier. Please wear sturdy footwear, bring waterproofs anmd a packed lunch. This is a Souoth Tynedside Council Countryside Team Event.
A bus will be provided to rake peaple from Littlehaven Beach car park to Roder for the start of the walk.
Booking is essential.
Venue: Meet at the "Conversation Piece", by Littlehaven Beach car park, South Shields for the bus at 9 am or meet at the Pier View car park, Sunderland at 9.30 am.

Return of the otter
Wed 3rd February 2010, 7 pm till 8 pmIn the 1970's the otter population in the UK plummeted to near extinction. Otter numbers are now recovering and their remarkable comeback means they are present once again in every county in England. Jim Cokil, director of Durham Wildlife Trust, charts the return of the otter to the north east in this illustrated talk about one of our most fascinating and charming mammals.

Make a difference day
Sunday 7th February 2010 10 am till 3 pmJoin the Countryside Team as they undertake a variety of practical conservation tasks at West Boldon EEC to celebrate World Wetland Day. These tasks will include pond maintenance work, coppicing and footpath work. It's is a chance to try your hand at some traditional countryside management techniques. Please dress in clothes that you do not mind getting dirty and bring along waterproofs and wellies if you have them. A warm lunch will be provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Art Antics
Monday 15th February 2010, 10 am till 3 pm
Have fun whilst creating some original masterpieces with local artist educator Howard Lee. Art will be produced on a pond theme from both natural and recycled materials. The session will start with a look at the creatures that lurk in the pond at West Boldon. The Artwork will be used to decorate the new Environmental Education Centre. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This is a South Tyneside Council countryside Team event.

Big Cat Sightings
Tuesday 2nd March 2010 7 till 8 pmBig cat sightings are regularly reported around Britain, such as the infamous Beast of Bodmin Moor. Ian Bond, a local naturalist, has been collecting information on big cat sightings from the north east for many years and has been a speaker at the annual Big Cats in Britain Conference. Join the Countryside Team for this fascinating talk about big cats in Britain, and particularly the North East.

Forestry Fun
Sunday 21st March 2010, 10 am till noonJoin the Countryside Team as they celebrate World Forestry Day. This day is celebrated in forests around the world on 21st March each year s people take time to consider the benefits of forests to the community - such as providing habitats for animals and plants, areas for recreation , education and scientific study and as a source of many products including timber and food. World forestry Day also aims to provide opportunities for people to learn how forests can be managed and used sustainavble for these msany purposes. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
