THE SAM BARTRAM CUP

On Thursday 28 February a community that once formed part of the mighty Durham coalfield, will gather to watch and play in a football festival to honour two former local players who started out with the village team and became top flight professionals. Goalkeeper Sam Bartram and full back Jack Shreeve left Boldon Villa in the 1930s for a professional career with Charlton Athletic.The pair went on to make around 1,000 appearances for the South London club, mostly in the top division.

In 1947 following Charlton's 1-0 Wembley victory over Burnley they returned triumphantly to Boldon with the FA Cup. The event later this month seeks to honour the local heroes and inspire South Tyneside's young players of today. Two games will be played and winners' trophies have been commissioned styled on the famous cup itself, with Charlton providing match kit and a signed goalkeeper's jersey for the hosts, now known as Boldon Community Association (The Villa). Later in the year youngsters from Boldon are to make a pilgrimage to The Valley to watch a match and view Bartram's statue.  The competition for The Sam Bartram Cups is set to become an annual affair.

West Boldon Environmental Education Centre

You are invited to attend a, one off, free course course in wildlife conservation.

This is a rare opportunity to visit the site as it is not normally open to the general public. if you are able to go you are advised to take your waterproofs and wellies.

The activities will take place from 10am till 3pm on Sunday 3rd February.

A warm lunch will be provided.

Relay for life

On 12th July we will be holding our second Relay for Life event to raise money for Cancer Research UK. In the lead up to the event teams of 8-15 people try to raise money by holding fundraising events eg coffee mornings .raffles sponsored events etc and then on July 12th all of the teams, their friends, families and members of the public all get together at Monkton Stadium in Jarrow, to celebrate their fundraising achievements and to remember those affected by cancer. The event begins at 2pm on Sat 12th July with a lap of honour for cancer survivors. Team members then take turns to walk the track throughout the day and night while everyone else joins in with fun activities and entertainment. At dusk candles of hope are lit around the track and burn throughout the night as people continue to walk until 10am on Sunday morning. All members of the public can be involved in all activities for free from 2pm until the Candle Ceremony finishes. Those who have registered with a team remain in the stadium where they can set up a team tent and can continue to participate in activities through the night-,remembering that

CANCER NEVER SLEEPS AND THAT FOR JUST ONE NIGHT, NOR DO WE!!

Last year 26 teams took part, we had eight survivors and we lit almost 500 candles. We raised a fantastic total of £20,000, which we would like to double this year. We want more teams more candles and in particular more survivors to show that TOGETHER WE CAN BEAT CANCER

Bat Walk & Talk - Wednesday 7th May – 9pm

You may never have noticed the nocturnal inhabitants of our parks. Meeting in the Grey Horse car park this fascinating walk and talk, which is suitable for all ages, is being led by a local bat expert and will cover bat activities in both parks.
